A piece of American History - this rare "Accented Hair" Kennedy Half Dollar is graded Proof 67 by NGC and is as rich in history as it is in eye appeal. The Accented Hair variety of the 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar is distinguished by extra hair strands above John F. Kennedy’s ear and a missing lower left serif on the “I” in LIBERTY, compared to regular coins with less pronounced hair. Jacqueline Kennedy, the president’s widow, significantly influenced the coin’s creation, requesting that the Washington Quarter remain unchanged, leading to the replacement of the Franklin Half Dollar instead with the Kennedy Half Dollar design. The Accented Hair variety was initially used for the first Proof Kennedy Half Dollars in 1964, but Mrs. Kennedy requested a modification to reduce the prominence of the hair strands above the ear, resulting in this variety being a one-year type. Only a small fraction—estimated at less than 5%—of the 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar mintage features the Accented Hair variety, making it extremely scarce compared to the regular proof coins of that year and highly sought-after by collectors.
