1878 "7 over 8 Tailfeathers" Morgan Dollars are a staple in many Morgan Dollar collections - showing 7 feathers stamped on top of the original 8 tailfeathers on the reverse. This variety was briefly created after the U.S. Mint made the adjustment on reverse dies only several weeks into the very first mintage in 1878, before changing to new dies with 7 tailfeathers shortly after. 
 
This coin is graded MS61 and housed in a popular early generation NGC Old "fatty" Holder - notably, this example was graded before "Strong" and "Weak" designations were given to this variety. The 7/8 feathers are visible to the naked eye and easy to view with a magnifying glass.
