A beautiful example from the Pre-Civil War “Free Banking Era” - The Cochituate Bank of Boston, Massachusetts was incorporated in 1849 and served the community from the basement headquarters of the United States Hotel on Beach Street in Boston, MA.
Following extremely brief success, the bank faced rumors of insolvency due to poor management as early as 1852, before failing in 1854.
This $5 Banknote was issued and signed by the President of the Cochituate Bank on January 1st, 1853 - Offering a beautiful depiction of a steamship & presumably a common Bostonian.
With an extremely low surviving population - This is the ONLY example PCGS Banknote has certified in this grade, with just 3 graded finer.
A chance to own a unique & rare piece of U.S. history!
